  58. 1.  About Folder Guard

  61. Folder Guard is a software-only security solution for personal or
  62. publicly accessible computers running the Windows 95 operating
  63. system.  Its features include:

  65. o Complete control over access to folders of your choice.  You can
  66.   hide any folder, so that its contents will be invisible to all
  67.   applications including Explorer, MS Office, MS-DOS programs,
  68.   common dialogs, etc.
  69.  
  70. o Optional user validation at logon, which helps protect your
  71.   Windows 95 files from intruders.  A log file can be set up to help
  72.   you keep track of the use of your computer.
  73.  
  74. o Password access to protected folders that can be set up, or
  75.   changed, at any time.

  77. o Flexible control of user access to many Windows 95 resources, such
  78.   as the Start Menu, Control Panel, etc.

  80. o User-specific access rights to folders and to other Windows 95
  81.   resources that you can configure separately for each user of your
  82.   computer.

  111.             inadvertently make your computer inaccessible.  Please

  122. 2. System requirements
  123. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  125. Folder Guard is designed for the operating system Windows 95.  It
  126. will NOT install or work under Windows NT (you can use instead the
  127. built-in security features of Windows NT to controll access to the
  128. folders).  At least 1 MB (one megabyte) of free space on your hard
  129. disk is required to install Folder Guard.  Folder Guard can be used
  130. on a network; please refer to Folder Guard Help for more
  131. information.

  135. 2. Installing and uninstalling Folder Guard
  136. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  138. Folder Guard comes with a convenient and flexible Setup utility,
  139. which allows you to both install and uninstall Folder Guard.
  140.  
  141. To install Folder Guard:
  142. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  144. a) If you have obtained Folder Guard as a compressed file,
  145.    uncompress the file into a temporary folder on a hard disk, or on
  146.    a floppy diskette.
  147.    
  148. b) Open folder containing the uncompressed set of Folder Guard files
  149.    and double-click 'Setup' (or 'Setup.exe').
  150.  
  151.    NOTE: If you have a previous version of Folder Guard already
  152.    installed on your computer and have set up the administrator's
  153.    password, you will be prompted for this password to continue the
  154.    installation.  Setup may also prompt you to restart Windows before 
  155.    the installation can be continued.
  156.    
  157. c) The Setup utility will suggest you the folder in which to install
  158.    Folder Guard.  You may accept the suggestion or choose other
  159.    location for Folder Guard files.  You can also specify whether to
  160.    add Folder Guard items to Start Menu and whether to create a
  161.    Desktop folder for Folder Guard components.
  162.  
  163. d) Setup utility will copy the files into the specified folder.
  164.  
  165.    NOTE: Except for the files copied into the destination folder and,
  166.    optionally, for the shortcuts added to the Start Menu and/or to the
  167.    Desktop folder (as described above), Setup does not install or 
  168.    modify any other files on your computer.
  169.    
  170. e) At the end of the installation procedure Setup will prompt you to
  171.    enter your name and a Registration Code.  If you have purchased a
  172.    license for continued use of Folder Guard and received your
  173.    Registration Code, you may enter it at that time, and the
  174.    evaluation version of Folder Guard will be converted into the
  175.    registered one.  Otherwise, you may skip entering the
  176.    registration code and Folder Guard will operate in the evaluation
  177.    mode.

  179. f) After the installation has been complete, you may delete files
  180.    from the temporary folder, from which you were installing Folder
  181.    Guard.

  183.    NOTE: At this point Folder Guard, although installed, in no way
  184.    affects the operation of your computer.  That is, all folders can
  185.    be freely accessed, as before, and no other restrictions are
  186.    imposed on the use of the computer.  To enable the protection of
  187.    folders you must run Folder Guard (FGuard.exe) and use its commands
  188.    to specify how exactly you want your computer to be protected.

  190. To uninstall Folder Guard:
  191. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  193. NOTE: it is NOT sufficient to simply delete files from the Folder
  194.    Guard folder to completely uninstall it.  Please follow the
  195.    procedure described below to uninstall Folder Guard and clean up
  196.    your system configuration:
  197.  
  198. a) Open folder 'Control Panel' and double-click on 'Add/remove
  199.    programs'.
  200.    
  201. b) Find the line "Chaosoft Folder Guard" in the list of products
  202.    which can be uninstalled and double-click it.
  203.  
  204.    NOTE: If you have set up the administrator's password, you will
  205.    be prompted for this password to continue. installation.  You 
  206.    may also be prompted to restart Windows before the uninstallation
  207.    can be continued.
  208.  
  209. c) The "Uninstalling Folder Guard" dialog box will appear prompting
  210.    you to confirm that you want to uninstall Folder Guard.  You may
  211.    choose to deactivate Folder Guard, delete its application files,
  212.    delete user files related to Folder Guard, and/or reset Folder
  213.    Guard settings. Press the Help button in this dialog box for more
  214.    information on the options offered.

  216. d) After the uninstalling procedure has been finished, you may need
  217.    to go to the folder where Folder Guard files were installed and
  218.    delete remaining files.

  222. 4. This is TRY BEFORE YOU BUY software

  225. This is NOT freeware or public domain software.  This is software
  226. which you can "try before you buy".
  227.  
  228. You may install the program in your system and use it for an
  229. evaluation period of up to 14 days.  After that time, you are
  230. required to purchase a license for continued use of the software or
  231. else stop using it.  You may freely copy and distribute evaluation
  232. copies of Folder Guard provided that all conditions specified in the
  233. distribution license are satisfied (please see the license agreement
  234. in the VENDINFO.DIZ file.)

  236. What's the difference between the Evaluation and Licensed versions?
  237.  
  238. There is NO functional difference between the evaluation and
  239. licensed versions of this software: all features of the licensed
  240. version are available and can be used in the evaluation version.
  241. Actually, it's the same program: you may convert an evaluation copy
  242. to a registered copy by entering your name and a Registration Code.
  243. Similarly, a registered copy of the program may be 'unregistered' by
  244. deleting the registration code or by just copying the program to
  245. another machine.

  247. The only difference between the licensed and evaluation versions is
  248. the prompt to disable Folder Guard, displayed by the evaluation
  249. version from time to time:

  259. While you are evaluating Folder Guard, you may reply "No" to this
  260. prompt and Folder Guard will continue its normal operation,
  261. restricting access to the folders you have chosen to protect.  If
  262. someone else is using the computer, though, that user may reply
  263. "Yes" to this prompt and thus restore access to the protected
  264. folders.

  266. To prevent this prompt from being displayed, you must register
  267. Folder Guard -- either by supplying a valid Registration Code at the
  268. end of the installation procedure, or by entering the Registration
  269. Code with the "Help | About" command of Folder Guard.

  272. continued use of Folder Guard.  Please refer to ORDER.TXT file for
